Round and Round It Goes

Sometimes - at the end of the day - I sit back and think, did all of that really happen in just one day?

The day started out early with some training and conference calls, so a pretty normal day.

And then during one of my conference calls our door bell rings. I wish that I could play the sound of the doorbell for you. The doorbell is at least 30 years old. So when it rings it plays a little tune, twice. And that tune lasts for about 20 seconds. So by the time the doorbell is finished ringing you feel like someone is standing at the front door constantly ringing your door bell for a full minute - straight. The best part is one of the chimes is broken, so that note is missed in the tune, that is playing for 45 seconds and it sounds like the door bell or one of its close relatives is dying.

So I am on one of my conference calls and I hear the dying doorbell and then I hear Brad try to open the front door. Which, if you don't open it just right, it will not open and you feel like you've broken the door. Then I hear Brad call through the front door to the person on the other side of the door to just hang tight until he can get the door open.

After I get off the call, I go downstairs to find out who was at the front door. Keep in mind we don't keep in mind that we don't get a lot of visitors at the house. I find Brad sitting on the couch not looking very happy. So I say:

Heather: Who was at the door?
Brad: The neighbor lady who lives behind us.
Heather: What did she want?
Brad: To tell us that one of the pipes on the roof is busted and we had a major water fall coming off the roof.

HOUSE: 596,287 - Brad & Heather 0

So Brad and I head up to the roof so he can see if he can fix it: (Notice how he is the only one who is actually on the roof. I am just keeping watch.)

Remember this little mishap?

Yep, well we had a close call with two fingers today right after Brad got down off the roof. Thankfully it just pulled at the beds of the nails and broke off the ends but didn't entirely rip off the nails (yes there was more than one nail involved in my attempt to close the sliding glass door).

HOUSE: 596,289 - Brad & Heather 0

At this point it is best just to leave the premises to give the house a chance to calm down before it decides to do something it will regret. I went and got my nails fixed. Not my thumb nail, mind you, because that doesn't really exist right now to be fixed. And by the way, having a thumb wrapped up in Band Aids is really putting a damper on my texting.

After returning from my recess from the house, I finish up my work day. And then pack to head out for my trip to visit Ms. Barbara Lynn MacNeil for her celebration weekend.

Check out the view from my flight. It was just amazing. Amazing enough to make me forget about the losing battle we are fighting with this house.

It was a great flight. I got a lot of work done, the middle seat was open, I had an amazing view, and I listened to some of my favorite music.

Once we land, I text Brad and tell him we made it and that it was an uneventful flight.

Then I go to baggage claim...

See how that conveyor belt is going around with no bags on it?

Yep, it kept doing that...

for 45 MINUTES!!!!

And as Barbara said while she was circling LAX for an hour waiting for my bag and me

"Only you Heather"

Luckily we were able to finish up the day at with some yummy food at "King's Fish House".

How appropriate...

I love you Barbara Lynn MacNeil. Here's to a fabulous weekend full of celebrating all of your accomplishments over the past 20 years!!

The Proposal

I never thought that I would be writing about this moment.

November 23, 2014 - That will be a day I will always remember.

I flew into ABQ on Saturday night to spend the week of Thanksgiving with Brad. As usual I was rushed trying to get stuff done before I left town for the week. It had been close to 4 weeks since I had seen Brad and I was really anxious to see him. It was great to just get to hang out with him that night. We went to my favorite taco place and then went and hung out at his place.

Sunday morning started out great since I got to hang out with my nieces and nephews, both Daniel and Miriam's kids and Andrew and Carly's kids. I love hanging out with my nieces and nephews so, as usual, I was running late to pick up Brad so we could head over to his ward (local church congregation).

We made it to church just in time. Everyone there was so excited to meet me. Brad's mom introduced me as her intended daughter-in-law. It was super cute.

After church Brad thought he might have a meeting to go to so we hung around for a while. But I was starving (of course) so we went and got something to eat. We were supposed to head over to the Brown's around 4:00 so we had some time to kill.

Over the summer Brad had mentioned he wanted to take me on a tour of The PIT, which is the University of New Mexico's basketball arena. Brad's dad used to be the head coach for the men's basketball team and the court of The PIT is named after his dad. While we were getting food he got a text from a friend of his (Brad knows a lot of people and has a lot of friends) who is the facilities manager for The PIT, and his friend had said that there was an hour between the women's basketball teams practices if we wanted to come over and take a tour. Since we were killing time, I thought: "Why not?" I haven't ever been to The PIT, so I thought it would be fun to take a tour before we headed over to the Brown's

We pulled up to The PIT and since the court sits 37 feet below ground, we had to walk down a ramp to get into the building. As we walked in, I was telling Brad's friend Scott how I had never been to The PIT before. He said that the lights were out on the court and Brad new the arena pretty well so he could show me around while he went up and turned the lights on.

Brad and I walked down the ramp to the court. There were curtains drawn across the ramp so I couldn't see anything but I could hear music playing. I thought it was music playing in the background while one of the teams were practicing. As we were walking Brad was telling me stories about his Dad. I was listening to his stories and wasn't really paying attention to anything else.

After we walked through the curtains, I was paying attention to A LOT of things.

First, I noticed that all the lights in the arena were off and there wasn't a basketball team practicing.

Second, I noticed this

And then I noticed that someone was taking my picture... So of course I looked up at Brad.

Can we talk about those curtains? I was so blown away by everything that Brad did with the proposal that as I was telling the story later, I kept referring to the curtains as red velvet. Ummmm, yeah, they are vinyl. But true to Brad's character, he didn't correct me. He let me believe that those curtains were red velvet. So to me they will always be red velvet curtains.

Here is what I love about a lot of these pictures: I am grinning from ear to ear in almost every picture. And, also, Brad's grin...

About that music that was playing in the background? Yep, it was Journey. We went to their concert earlier this year and got to meet the band. How appropriate right? Just wait - he thought of everything - it could not have been more perfect for me.

Here he is showing me the Queen's throne and asking me to sit. This is when Brad took a moment to explain how special The PIT is to him because of his dad and how he couldn't think of a better place to ask me to be his wife.

Once I sat down, he started to pull the ring box out of the teddy bear's backpack. Queue all the emotions:

Me: I can't believe this is actually happening
Brad: Starts shaking as he is pulling the box out and gets down on one knee

Now, I have watery eyes and I am shaking. With both of us shaking so bad, I thought for sure a "miss" was in the cards, but the ring fit perfectly on my finger.

It is beautiful. Is it too cheesy to say that I feel like this ring was made for me?

As he proposed "Faithfully" by Journey started playing. So Brad asked me to dance under the spotlight at center court in The PIT. Seriously, can it get any more romantic than that?

Brad was very excited that I said YES!!!

Now it's time for some formal pictures celebrating the moment. Here are just a few.

Apparently, the Browns were still expecting us and we had a schedule to keep. As we were leaving the arena and driving over to the Browns, I kept asking Brad for my phone because I wanted to call my parents to share the good news. I had given it to him to hold while we were walking into The PIT. Finally, he said
Brad: You're not getting your phone.
Me: Why not?
Brad: Because I promised the Browns we would tell them first.
Me: What about my parents?

In my head, I was wondering about his mom and thinking shouldn't we tell our parents first? But I was so beyond cloud nine, that I really didn't care.

As we pulled into the Brown's I noticed that there were a lot of cars. Here is how that conversation went:

Me: There are a lot of cars. How many people are here?
Brad: I don't know
Me: Who knows about this?
Brad: Everyone
Me: Does my family know about this?
Brad: No
Me: (As I notice a company car from my brothers' company but not either of my brothers' cars) Is Katherine here?
Brad: Maybe (He's starting to crack under the pressure and as we are getting close to the house)
Me: Is my family here? (Said with the tone of: they BETTER be here if all of your friends are here.)
Brad: I don't know.

So we started to walk around the corner and we came across this sign:

As we were walking down the steps Brad says to me: There are a lot of kids over there, do you recognize any of them? I look in more detail and I see some of my nieces and nephews playing on the playground. I gave a little scream because I was so excited to have my family there!

And then we walked through the doors and there was this huge scream!! Brad had arranged for an engagement party with our family and friends.

While we were standing there, Brad says he has one more surprise for me and points me around the corner. So I step around the corner and guess who is there? MY PARENTS!!! They had driven through snow and bad weather to be there to celebrate with Brad and me. Even now as I think about how Brad knew how important that was to me and the effort he made to invite them and the effort that they made to be there; it means the world to me and I am crying as I type this. So I screamed and jumped up and down like a little girl in my heels and ran over to give them a huge hug!

President Brown had prepared a little poem that he read to everyone and then we just got to mingle.

To me, this proposal shows exactly why Brad is the perfect man for me. He knew that I would want to keep the actual proposal as a moment between us, but that I would want to have pictures of it. He also knew that I would want to be able to celebrate the moment with the people who are close to me. And what's even better about it is he wanted those same things!!

I fall more and more in love with him as I recount everything he did to make this day special. He is an amazing man and I am so beyond blessed to be able to get to spend the rest of eternity with him. :Sigh:
